JUST TREKKING THE ENDLESS PRAIRIE …

After the seemingly endless rains we finally got treated to some real spring weather, so I took the opportunity to get out and enjoy it by doing some trekking. You probably didn’t know it, but the highways going through the urban areas have been landscaped in various styles. I-70 which goes through my neighborhood was apparently designed to reflect Missouri’s endless prairies.

Sure, it might look like a lot of weeds, but in reality it is a display of the native grasses and wildflowers that once covered the land along the two mighty rivers.

Just check the pictures …

There are blue flowers …

Red flowers …

Gold flowers …

White flowers …

Tiny yellow flowers …

Blooming grasses …

Pearly leaved grasses …

I have no idea what their real names are; they all look like weeds to me. Even though they all are part of our Missouri historical heritage.

I suppose the Native Americans that lived here had a name for all these plants and grasses, but there’s no way I can ask them. They were all shipped off to Oklahoma years ago. And I doubt if these same plants grow in their new home in Oklahoma, because the land the government gave them was kind of barren. I doubt if  they really care anymore these days, especially since they discovered all the oil underneath that barren top soil.

The flowers are kind of pretty, and Mlle. Renee always checks them out when we walk along the street bordering the highway. I thing she’s really looking for the rabbits that live there.
