MY DAILY CALENDAR – DAY 326 – NOVEMBER 22, 2013
MY DAILY CALENDAR FOR FRIDAY, DAY 326 OF 2013: The rain has finally stopped, and the temps will soon be dropping to near frigid levels by late tonight and into tomorrow. So what else is new? No snow is in sight. YET!
In reality, there was no challenge today. I’m quite sure the daily editor of the calendar brought his or her son or daughter to work the day this page was being put together. I followed all the folding instructions and when I was done I discovered that I had folded …
Not a folded paper hatchet, but a folded paper numeral seven. That’s life.
WHERE WERE YOU FIFTY YEARS AGO TODAY?
I was serving in the U. S. Army stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas. I was a food inspector with the Army Veterinary Corps, and my assignment was to inspect the quality, condition and the safety of all food arriving at the main post commissary. Because all food deliveries were made early in the morning before the commissary opened, I had to rise and shine very early every morning. About noon I walked down the block to the Veterinary Headquarters Building down the block.
Every Friday afternoon, one of the Veterinary Officers assigned to the fort held a clinic for animals owned by people assigned there. So, on Friday afternoon, I went from Food Inspector to Animal Handler at the clinic. This meant I had to make a quick change from my first class uniform to pet safe fatigues. Suddenly the Major rushed into the building and shouted, “The president’s been shot!” Someone rushed over and turned on the TV in the waiting room, and the entire office gathered around waiting for good news that never came. Thankfully, no one brought their pets to the animal clinic that day either. Kennedy had been the first person for whom I had been able to vote. So it was a very personal sad day for me.
Don’t let it be forgot
That once there was a spot
For one brief shining moment that was known
