MY DAILY CALENDAR…DAY 276 – OCTOBER 3, 2013

MY DAILY CALENDAR FOR THURSDAY, DAY 276 OF 2013: On the agenda for today we have rain scheduled and a baseball game. Not that I would be attending the baseball game. The last time I went to a baseball game was the opening day game of the 1993 season. I was given the tickets because I got a special project (consisting of three individual items) for the company president written, printed and mail in just 24 hours. And I’ve never really been a baseball fan.

TODAY’S ORIGAMI CHALLENGE – PAGODA: Actually, it’s the same as yesterday, the day before and the day before that … only smaller and taller.

I notice my pagoda is starting to lean like the Tower Of Pisa did  before it started to straighten itself out.

Any way, here’s the MENSA WORD PUZZLE FO TODAY:

MY DAILY CALENDAR…DAY 189 – JULY 8, 2013

MONDAY – DAY 189: It’s the second week of July and regular summer temperatures have returned to West Walnut Manor … 93F at High Noon with a somewhat hazy sun. I really should do laundry today,  but after checking the underwear and sock drawers I realized I’m good for another two weeks. I think that is the criteria most single gentlemen use to determine when to do laundry. I’m also going to wait until the sun goes down before mowing the front lawn.

“Procrastination becomes the wisdom of those growing older.”  – Trébor Reldé – Scandinavian Sage

Went to dinner last evening with my brother and his family. My sister-in-law made the best melt-in your-mouth pulled pork ever with sautéed peppers and onions, fried corn and baked mac and cheese — something from each of the basic comfort food categories. Loved it all!! Also realized that the cacophony of a five-year old at play can be mind melting after a couple of hours. I actually love kids … especially when I can hand them a quarter and invite them to play in another room.

When my brother came to pick me up, Mlle. Renee was at her fawning happy face worst when she saw her Uncle Jimmy. I never saw a dog get more excited about seeing someone. Guess she thought he was there to take her for a ride. She likes going for rides, until she realizes that she’s really going to visit her vet lady.

TODAY’S ORIGAMI CALENDAR CHALLENGE: CAT – Part OneDSCF0458

I did an origami cat a couple of months ago from another source. It was one of the weekends when the calendar failed of offer a folding project.DSCF0457 I made it an oriental cat by using a Chinese folding paper. For today’s cat I going for a more ordinary everyday cat.DSCF0459

Because I wanted the cat to have a bit more personality, I altered some of the folding steps a little bit. Tomorrow, I finish up by folding the cat’s body.  Think I’ll call him Tom.

MONDAY FUN TIME EXTRA:  GROANER ALERT ! Here’s the Mensa Puzzle Calendar for today. I thought this one might be punny.DSCF0461

Then again, it could just be dumb ~

MY DAILY CALENDAR…DAY 188 – JULY 7, 2013

SUNDAY – DAY 188: Wha-ta hell! My clock radio woke me up this morning from the heart of hillbilly heaven. What happened to my classic radio station? It was there somewhere in the background playing Bach, but it was being drowned out by a country/western station and a twangy girl singer mooing about being wronged by a false hearted lover. Don’t get me wrong, I openly admit I am not a fan of today’s over-abundant sound-alike girl singers in the genre, and I don’t appreciate them moving in on my local classical FM bandwidth. OK, so while it might be caused by low-flying satellites, or solar flairs, I prefer to think it is the work of some mustachio-twirling villain’s vendetta to ruin my Sunday morning wake-up. Either that, or Mlle. Renee is using her tail to serve as an extra antenna to get me out of bed to get her something to ear. It only happens on Sunday mornings.

I just remembered that I forgot to show you the Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal Cranberry Nut Cookies I baked for my brother yesterday.DSCF0445

My Origami Calendar Challenge – Like I noted yesterday, no challenge on the weekend calendar again. But to keep my fingers nimble I asked another of Stan DeMon’s cousins to visit.  Meet Flora DeMon from Hawaii.DSCF0432_2

FLORA: Aloha, boys!

FRAN: She’s our cousin?

STAN: Distant, very distant.

If you would like to fold your own member of the DeMon Family, just follow these simple steps. Remember you have to start with a perfectly square thin sheet of paper.DSCF0428

If you don’t know how to fold  the starting  BIRD BASE, I refer you to my post of DAILY CALENDAR CHALLENGE #131 – MAY 11, 2013 http://wp.me/p1e2fO-1pv

ROUND AND ABOUT THE WEST WALNUT MANOR HOMESTEAD – Well, its July and the Rose Of Sharon (Althea Hibiscus syriacus) is busting out all around the yard.

DSCF0434

I grew these shrubs from seeds I collected from the plants that grew through the fence of the Sisters Of Saint Mary’s Motherhouse behind St. Mary’s Hospital several years ago. My shrubs are now about five-feet tall and have reached mature blooming state. They are a member of the Hibiscus family that is native to China and India. In the Western world it received its name from the Biblical Rose Of Sharon which it isn’t. It also grows quite well in the mid-west where it can be trained to grow as a shrub or tree. Mine are rather shrubby.  If you look closely you can see a visitor at the bottom of this blossom.

DSCF0436

DSCF0437

That is one big old bee who is really getting coated in pollen. DSCF0438

I expect to have a bumper crop of seed pods this fall.

Anybody want some seeds? They still carry the Sisters’ blessing. And they’re easy to start in the spring.

Meanwhile, back in the backyard a member of the near extinct Eurasian Tree Sparrow family dropped in to see what kind of seed was in the feeder today.DSCF0442

Looks like mostly cracked corn, and he prefers the millet and nut pieces.

To hot to cut grass today, so I’ll just rest today and get to it early tomorrow morning or after sunset.

MY DAILY CALENDAR…DAY 187 – JULY 6, 2013

Saturday – Day 187: The clock radio woke me up this morning playing Borodin. It’s so great to have a classical music station back on the air in the Wicket City. And Borodin was such a great composer of romantic music … even though most people think he stole it from Kismet. Must send a donation to the station to show my support. Didn’t want to get up, but Mlle. Renee insisted it was time for her to go outside. Going to make some Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal Cookies today, so I hope I have all the ingredients. Might also trim the front lawn if it isn’t too hot.  Oh, oh, the AC just went on … that could mean our cool weather might be coming to an end. The AC hasn’t been on for a week now. But it turns itself on when the temp inside the house reaches 81. Also looks like we might have some more rain.

My Origami Calendar Challenge: Yeah, you guessed it another weekend with no origami projects listed. DSCF0423

So with such a lack of excitement, I decided it was time for a guest appearance of Stan Demon, who just happens to have his left coast cousin Fran visiting him.DSCF0424

FRAN: Wow, what do you do for excitement around here, Stan?

STAN: I don’t know, but this calendar thinks we should act like eggs.

FRAN: Bad yolks, Stan.

And with that I decided it was time for a Saturday afternoon nap.

UNREST IN THE TOY BOX!  It seems like Woody’s decision to make STAN his new action adventure buddy has upset some of the long forgotten residents of the community.DSCF0157

Also in another corner of the toy box the Birthday Monkey is trying to cheer up the Rainbow Bear who isn’t feeling very gay because SCOTUS still haven’t made up their minds on the issues important to him.DSCF0161

Their indecisiveness could ruin next week’s Pride St. Louis for him.

DSC07419 So here we are on Friday with a folding challenge that’s already completed.DSC07442So what do we do? What else, but bring back a previously introduced character to see if we can start some type of conflict or interaction.DSC07420

#1 THE ORIGAMI CALENDAR CHALLENGE – STAND-UP LETTER FOLD
On Project Runway the designers often get the chance to design the print of the fabric with which they will be working. So I designed my own Renee-wrap folding paper for this challenge.DSC07273

And after following the eight simple folding techniques we produce the following easel-backed end result.

It’s easy, once you know where to place your key photo on the to print page. Also the the printed page should be placed with the images upside down and the blank side facing up when you begin the folding process. Just follow these simple photo steps to help you with the folding instruction on the calendar page…
