Photos show us the surface of things, but they often tell much deeper stories about the objects they depict — and about the people who take them. This week, let your inner world and the outside one converge in a photo.
In case you can’t figure out what this photo is … this week we had a totally fantastic giant full moon on the horizon and I decided to capture it on film. Unfortunately, it was right behind a cluster of trees and this is what the camera captured. I should also tell you that I had a mid-winter congested head cold this week. So I agree, my inner world and my outside world converged in the photo I shot.
Yes, spring will officially start today at 11:57 am in the Central Time Zone. But it would probably be best if you kept your winter clothing handy for a few more days … or possibly weeks. I’m playing the part of a skeptic this year.
Taken at the M.B.G. 2014 Orchid Show
But the big spring question of the day is … DID THE SWALLOWS RETURN TO SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO YESTERDAY?
It has long been legend that each spring on the Feast of Saint Joseph, (March 19) the swallows that nest in the nooks and crannies of the old mission of San Juan (which dates back to the 1700s) return to the old mission from their winter nesting grounds in Argentina. They don’t spend the summer, and some will travel as far north as the Arctic Circle before heading back to winter in Argentina.
The faithful say that they did. But realists conceded that the number of birds has been decreasing each year. The reason … too many humans building too many structures that replace the old buildings where the birds used to build their mud nests. So, folks, if you want to keep your legends working, quit using brooms to knock down those ugly globs of mud they keep building on your homes and other buildings.
THE ORIGAMI BIRD OF THE DAY PROJECT: And what else could I fold for today besides a swallow?
MY DAILY CALENDAR TUESDAY, DAY 335 – THE LAST DAY OF 2013: And what kind of year was it? It was a year like all years … filled with good things and bad things … happy things and sad thing … but when all was said and done … WE’RE STILL HERE! And, if we weren’t able to turn it into the best of all possible worlds, we did take quite a few steps in the right direction.
THE LAST ORIGAMI CHALLENGE OF 2013 – THE NEW YEAR CROWN
And to introduce the last piece of origami for the year … I present the newest member of out cast of thousands … the one and only … YODA!The voice of YODA was provided in all six Star Wars movies by Frank Oz (who also was the voice for Fozzie Bear / Miss Piggy / Animal / Cookie Monster / Bert / Grover / Sam the Eagle and The Mighty Favog among other Muppet creations. Contrary to some rumors Mr. Oz is still alive. and he sure better be doing the voice of Yoda for the new Star Wars films Disney is making.
Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind?
Not on the Smiling Bagel!
WELL, THAT’S IT FOR 2013 … THE SAND HAS JUST ABOUT RUN OUT OF THE HOUR GLASS … HERE’S WISHING YOU THE VERY BEST IN THE NEW YEAR. PEACE AND LOVE … Rob and Renee.
MY DAILY CALENDAR FOR MONDAY, DAY 355 OF 2013: Woke up this morning to discover the outside temps hovering between ZERO and 10 F. Even though I got the flu shot back in October my current cold/flu infection lingers on causing me head and body distress. This morning, the hair follicles on my head even started aching. I would presume there is nothing really wrong with me that wouldn’t be cured by a couple of head pats and a loving poor baby. Guess Mlle. Renee is lacking in loving care.
Did you know that none of the napkins in the family linen drawers are square? So instead of a cloth napkin, I had to resort to using a square sheet of folding paper today. Kind of small, but I guess it will have to do. Won’t help with greasy fingers though.
Well, we’re doing a WEEKEND CALENDAR for Saturday and Sunday again since I’ve been a bit under the weather since Friday. Actually, I’ve been making like the Lord of the Manor the last two days just lying around the house in my robe and PJs and catching up with my reading and watching movies I’ve missed. Mlle. Renee really wasn’t too keen that I didn’t feel like playing with her in the yard. Today, shortly after I let her out to run around, I heard her knocking on the backdoor.
I think she wanted to tell me I had been replaced. That’s Leaper, a young male pup who lives a couple of houses up the block. He earned his name by never having met a fence he couldn’t jump over. He jumps over my fence and the two of them run around the yard frolicking until Renee knocks on the door to come in for a drink and perhaps a Beggin’ Strip. Leaper doesn’t know what a Beggin’ Strip is and always declines my offer of same. (But I think he thinks Renee is his mom and also the alpha dog.
I made Renee come in and Leaper turned around galumphed off to jump over the fence and head for his home.
I couldn’t miss my sign by replacing an E with and I in 2 – OVERGORGE
THE WALL MONKEY:
It needed new batteries! And it only took me an hour to reset the time.
MY DAILY CALENDAR FOR FRIDAY, DAY 352 OF 2013: Thankfully, I was able to survive the Christmas holiday, only to wake up and discover I had a tickle in the throat and a stuffiness developing in the nose. So I paid all the year end bills, dressed warmly and departed for a letter posting and trip to the stupidmarket to replenish the dwindling larder. I only had frozen chicken breasts in the freezer, and I felt I would need some red meat to feed a cold. When I came home I washed the dishes, emptied the trash, feed the birds (and squirrels) and moved the recycling bin to the street for tomorrow morning’s pickup. Then I came in took a couple of aspirins and crawled into my bed with my Kindle. I was soon followed by Mlle. Renee. And we spent the rest of the afternoon reading and napping.
Take that Origami Calendar producers … that will teach you to mess with a paper folder suffering from an impending head cold!
Trust me, the 50s hair style is not BEEHIVE, CREWCUT, FLATTOP, MOHAWK or DUCKTAIL. I know, mohawk and ducktail are not seven letter hairstyles, but I couldn’t think of any other 50s hair styles. Did you forget I have a developing headcold?
AND I FORGOT TO PICK UP MUCINEX AT THE STORE!
MY DAILY CALENDAR FOR THURSDAY, DAY 351 OF 2013: And in case you didn’t know, today is BOXING DAY in the British Empire. That is traditionally the day following Christmas Day, when servants and tradesmen would receive gifts, known as a “Christmas box”, from their bosses or employers. In other words … MERRY CHRISTMAS to the folk who do all the work from the folk who get all the money. It’s also the day I’ll share with you …
WHAT DID I FIND UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE?
In addition to love, goodwill and friendship I also received:
Which will become my daily challenge for 2014 replacing the daily origami challenge.
Which will become my Saturday and Sunday Challenge for 2014. So now you know what to expect when you visit the Smiling Bagel next year … in addition to my ever so charming daily ramblings and fantasies.
Which I always appreciate. OK, so everyone knows I’m hard to please.
And I got several new additions for my Christmas trees
All in all, a VERY good Christmas!
It was one of those scientific things created for animals to keep them stimulated. You hide treats in any of the eight different compartments four of which have flipper doors for the dog to lift up to find the treat. They also have to learn to turn the unit around to move the doors over to the sections that don’t have a treet. Here’s Renee on her first attempt at it.
You’ll notice that she had no trouble openning the doors or spinning the unit around. When it comes to finding treats, Renee is a genuine Einstein amoung hounds.
Then I spent the rest of the day with each of my two brothers and their families. And when I got home I was too tired to even turn on the computer.
I even put the Santa puppet on my finger to do a holiday puppet show for Renee, but she said she’d rather play with her new treat toy. So, I let her open the gifts my nieces sent to her. She’s a very popular pup you know.
That’s Pinky the Pig her new stuffed toy. (Though I don’t know how long it will remained stuffed.) She didn’t put it down for the rest of the night and even brought it into my bed when she came in to sleep with me in the middle of the night.
Mr. Bill (my oldest friend) and I went out for our annual Christmas lunch and movie afternoon. The movie was action packed and seemed to whiz by for a near three-hour film. And yes, it left us cliff hanging for next year final episode. Lunch was at the Blackfinn Grill. And I went for the Total Bacon Cheese Burger. OK, it was lunch and dinner combined.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!
MY DAILY CALENDAR FOR MONDAY, DAY 357 OF 2013: And if I thought today was cold, am I going to be frosted tomorrow! The current temp at 11:30 pm is 12 degrees F and dropping. I actually stayed inside all day and did a bit of holiday baking. I actually enjoy baking, and I could see myself with a little bake shop. As long as I could find someone to do the clean up behind me. Today I felt ambitious and whipped up a double batch of Christmas stollens. These are a made using a yeast dough that need kneading and rising before baking. And here’s what I produced …
Twelve stollens all together which I will be wrapping and handing out on Christmas Day.
TODAY’S ORIGAMI CHALLENGE – THE DOLLAR PEACE DOVE:
Would you believe that I did not have a foldable one dollar bill in my wallet. So I had to use a five?
Trust me, as soon as I shot the photo, I unfolded the fiver and returned it to my wallet … wrinkles and all.
AND CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY FOR THE HOLIDAYS…
